Dear ,
Spectral Edge has emerged from the highly-regarded Colour Group at the University of East Anglia, a world leader in colour research. The Group is active in a range of different research areas such as Computational Colour Constancy, Physics based vision, Image Reproduction, Colour Graphics, Image Indexing, Colour scanning, Colour Science, and Computer Vision.
Members of the management team have had first-hand previous experience of running - and successfully selling - analogous businesses.
The Technology
The company’s technology enhances images and video by using information outside the normal visible spectrum – notably from the infra-red range - or applying transformations to that within it. Applications range from accessibility for TV content, computational photography to enhance camera images, and surveillance.
Tomorrow’s displays will show more of the visible colour range. This technology underpins these trends by fusing image & video in the most natural and pleasing way.
The company has various patents pending on its technology and will continue to work closely with the Colour Group to develop further valuable IP.
The Market
The technology has applications across a broad range of visual display markets. It is worth noting that the three top imager companies have total sales in excess of $5.4bn pa.
Initial traction has been gained in the use of this technology in set-top boxes to counter the effects of colour blindness. However, the surveillance industry is seen as a near-term, large-scale opportunity particularly when home security and drone cameras are included. Some indicative statistics are
- More than 1bn compact system cameras & smartphone sales in 2015
- More than 300m TV and STB sales in 2015
- More than 50m/yr surveillance cameras by 2019
- More than 12mu/yr UMV/drone sales by 2019

The Investment Case
We are very impressed with the company’s technology and the quality of its early commercial engagements. The fact that the team has a successful track-record in this area is also a significant contributor to our enthusiasm for this opportunity.
The company will now face the significant challenge of delivering on its early commercial progress.
