Dear ,
Zegami spun out of Oxford University in February 2016 following initial academic work by Stephen Taylor, Head of the Computational Biology Research Group at Oxford, and Roger Noble, CTO at software company Coritsu Group. Over the course of the last three years, both Oxford University and Coritsu have developed the core software and complementary IP to enable commercial development of the Zegami product.
This investment round is intended to fund the continuing development of a fully saleable application that can be sold directly to customers, as well as an OEM component to software companies and resellers. Work is also ongoing to develop the software to the standard required for analytical academic users. Funds will also be deployed to accelerate Zegami’s sales capabilities.
The Technology
Zegami’s technology allows users to view large collections of images and associated metadata in a single field of view and to perform intuitive data analysis. With the ability to display tens of thousands of images, documents, video, 3D objects and dashboards in a single field of view, Zegami lets users search, sort, filter and group in real time.
The software can be integrated into existing database management and business intelligence reporting software or can sit above it as a separate component layer.
The Opportunity
The technology has broad application potential across many sectors. As an example, Cancer Research UK are interested in using the software as the visual user interface for a database of cancer images. There has already been specific interest from high technology academic users in high throughput microscopy and x-ray data visualisation. Sales have already been made in the markets of student management and physical asset management.
The ability to display tens of thousands of images, documents, 3D objects or dashboards and then to search, sort, filter or group them in real time may open up, in the longer term, the potential to become a next generation visual user interface on which an operating system can be developed.
The Market
The company initially intends to focus on the physical and digital asset management opportunities. It is working with customers both directly and through OEMs and resellers. Growth over the short-term will be driven by delivering solutions to current customers and implementing them. In the longer term Zegami aims to be active in all sales channels and across more sectors, including the academic market, for visual image management.
The Model
The operating model is based on sales of licences and associated support and maintenance along with related professional services. Revenue will also be generated in the future from the provision of the Zegami solution as a Software as a Service.
The Team
Charles Pope, Chairman, qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC and has over 20 years’ experience in the computer software business. He was the founder of Retain International which developed the leading staff scheduling solution for professional service businesses around the world which was sold to Capita plc in 2014.
Samuel Conway, CEO, was the MD of Coritsu Group with experience in software and consulting services sales. He has a background in biomedical engineering and an MBA in international business. Samuel founded Coritsu Group in July 2011 and over the last 2 years has financially supported the growth and development of Zegami through the organisations core service offering, SharePoint consultancy.
Roger Noble, CTO, was the CTO of Coritsu Group and has spent the last five years developing the software and know-how that underlies the core Zegami application. Over the last 2 years Roger has taken Zegami from being a developer’s toolset to a MVP that can be sold and distributed today. With not only a well thought-out user interface but also a fully functional plugin back end, making it adaptable to any database application.
Stephen Taylor, CSO, is Head of the Oxford University Computational Biology Research Group. From 1999-2001 he worked for Entigen as Senior Director of Bioinformatics where he project managed the development of BioManager, a web based bioinformatics workbench used at the Australian National Genome Information Service.
Peter Collins, NED, is Commercial Director of Retain International which is the leading global software solution provider for staff scheduling in professional service organisations. Peter has been instrumental in the rapid growth of Retain’s sales ensuring its dominance in its market sector.
The Investment Case
Zegami’s application is intuitive to use and enables the monitoring and manipulation of large quantities of data in a visual way. This opens up many possibilities for its use. The product is in the early stages of commercialisation but we believe the management team has the capabilities to take the product to rapid commercial success.
