Joins forces with BASF to develop next generation bead cleaning technology

Future of commercial laundry to be showcased at The Clean Show 2013 in New Orleans

Manchester, New Hampshire (May 13, 2013) – Xeros Ltd., the UK-based innovator of an ultra low water cleaning system, announced today that it has partnered with the chemical company BASF to jointly develop polymer beads based on engineering plastics that will increase the cleaning power in laundry applications. This long-term agreement reflects the mutual commitment of the two companies to maximize the commercialisation of the Xeros cleaning system and protect the environment by conserving water and energy.

“This is an exciting time for Xeros,” said Bill Westwater, Chief Executive Officer of Xeros Ltd. “Our growth strategy is on target, building on the momentum of our international expansion into the United States via our subsidiary Xeros Inc.. This long-term partnership with BASF solidifies the future of our revolutionary cleaning system, bringing us together with one of the world’s most powerful companies in terms of chemical engineering, product performance and social responsibility.”

With installations underway in three distinct segments of the commercial laundry industry, Xeros will formally launch its new system to the worldwide commercial laundry market at the June 2013 Clean Show in New Orleans. Xeros will showcase its innovative bead-cleaning technology and highlight the future of the commercial and residential laundry industry at the event, which will be held June 20-22 at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. Here, guests will have an opportunity to see the Xeros technology in action and meet the creative minds behind it.

The Xeros cleaning system comprises a special washing machine designed to release the beads into the drum for cleaning, and which then removes the beads from the clothes once the cleaning is complete. With at least 70% less water, up to 50% less energy  and approximately 50% less detergent, the Xeros system delivers superior cleaning results compared to conventional washing. The beads have a lifespan of hundreds of washes before being collected and recycled.

“On the one side, as globally active chemical company we can support Xeros through our global network and the worldwide availability of our materials. On the other side we can make use of our strong research and development base which can provide tailormade plastics with specific combinations of properties,” explains Matthias Dietrich from BASF’s business unit Engineering Plastics Europe.

Through the use of polymer bead technology, the Xeros cleaning process has shown to be more effective than traditional “soap and water” methods. By combining the beads’ molecular structure with a proprietary detergent solution, the result is a superior cleaning medium that beats even water. The dirt from soiled items is attracted and absorbed by the beads, producing cleaner results than aqueous washing methods.

The Xeros system first entered the U.S. market at Manchester, NH’s Sterling Linen Services, a high-quality linen processing and rental service for area hotels, hospitals and restaurants. Xeros quickly followed by installing its next machine at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, VA, which began using Xeros’ proprietary bead cleaning solution for its guestrooms and restaurants. Then, in February 2013, the company extended its reach into the North American dry cleaning channel with the installment of a third unit at Crest Cleaners in Clifton, Virginia.

By combining the beads’ molecular structure with a proprietary detergent solution, the result is a superior cleaning medium that beats even water. The dirt from soiled items is attracted and absorbed by the beads, producing cleaner results than aqueous washing methods.

In the US, the Xeros system has been installed at Manchester, New Hampshire’s Sterling Linen Services, a high-quality linen processing and rental service for area hotels, hospitals and restaurants. Meanwhile in the UK the company are celebrating the sale of its first machine to high street laundry chain, Johnsons.

Xeros plan to officially roll-out their commercial solution at the 2013 Clean Show for the commercial laundry marketplace, with a household sized machine in development for launch in 2014. The first Xeros machines – capable of washing up to 25kg of clothes at a time – are aimed at the commercial cleaning market, which includes hotels and institutions like prisons and hospitals, as well as high street cleaners.

Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg recently toured Xeros’ facility at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham. During the visit he commented; “It takes your breath away. It is such a simple idea, but it is so revolutionary,” said Mr Clegg. “It could save billions and billions of litres of water over time. The implications are profound in terms of water and energy use.

“This is a great example of what we want to see happening in the British economy. It was academics that first came up with the idea and it has been translated, partly thanks to support from the government and private investors, into something that hopefully make its way into the shops fairly soon.”

Xeros was named a top invention by TIME magazine, winner of ‘Best Technological Breakthrough’ in The Climate Week Awards 2011; listed in WWF’s survey of global ‘Green Game Changers’ and selected as one of 19 best fast-growing ‘Clean and Cool’ companies to go on a government-sponsored mission to Silicon Valley in February, 2010.

Revolymer

Launch of degradable nicotine gum

Revolymer, the British  polymer company  developing products for  a number  of high value fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) markets which has recently listed on AIM (“REVO”), is pleased to announce that is has closed distribution  deals with Associated Retail Pharmacies (”  ARP”) and Family Health Care  Pharmacies (“FHCP”), both subsidiaries of the  McKesson Group, and launched its  nicotine gum in Canada.

ARP is western Canada’s largest pharmacy association and FHCP is a Canadian independent pharmacy with locations in Ontario and the western province. These two pharmacy chains will be offering Revolymer’s nicotine gum (Rev7 Generation 2) for sale under the ‘Preferred’ brand. The products are being distributed by SDS Pharma on Revolymer’s behalf with Canada being the first country ever to benefit from this unique gum.

The nicotine chewing gum market is worth over US$1.2bn worldwide (Source: Datamonitor). Revolymer has applied its proprietary polymer technology which not only controls the release of nicotine but also helps to mask its bitter taste through molecular encapsulation. The product has been scaled up by a manufacturing partner with 2.5 million pieces of gum made in both 2 and 4  mg doses with flavours of spearmint, peppermint and fresh fruit.

Third party evaluations have confirmed that the Revolymer product is  superior in taste and texture to  current generic nicotine gums,  and, as it lacks  the bitter taste of many commercial nicotine gums, it should further help  smokers in their quest to quit smoking. Moreover, an additional benefit to ex -smokers is that the product will whiten teeth as it is chewed.

Commenting on the announcement, Roger Pettman, Chief Executive of Revolymer plc, stated:

“In July we successfully listed Revolymer on the AIM market and raised £25million to support our strategy of launching new polymer-based products. We expect this strategy to generate significant and growing high quality revenue streams as we license our unique technologies to manufacturers and marketers within the global high value FMCG, allowing us to leverage our relatively low and static cost base. Today’s deal with two important Canadian subsidiaries of the McKesson Group endorses this strategy, gives us an opportunity to exploit the $40m Canadian nicotine gum market, and is an important step in realising significant value from our unique polymer technology platforms.

“Achieving regulatory approval and then distribution across Canada so quickly is another key milestone for Revolymer and I am also delighted to be working closely with Greg and the team at SDS Pharma.”

Greg Kelly, President of SDS Pharma added, “We at SDS Pharma Partners are very excited to be working with Revolymer on the introduction of new nicotine replacement gums to Canada.

Consumer and customer responses have demanded improved taste and a more pleasant mouth-feel versus the currently marketed products. Revolymer meets and exceeds those demands and the resulting user experience is superb.”

Revolymer

Successful IPO:

We are very pleased to announce the first IPO from our UK Tech Fund I. After a hugely successful roadshow Revolymer plc has today announced a conditional placing of new ordinary shares with institutional investors to raise gross proceeds of £25 million and that the admission of its entire issued share capital to trading on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange plc is expected to take place on 10 July 2012.
The IPO was priced at the top of the indicative range, and represents an 8% premium to the price at which we invested in April 2011 – a 55% premium including initial tax reliefs for our investors, against a backdrop of the FTSE SmallCap Index losing 10.3% over the same period*.

Debuts in ‘Home of the Future’

Xeros debuted its revolutionary, environmentally friendly cleaning process on Channel 4 in a new series that shows how an ordinary Sheffield family can use cutting edge technologies and gadgets to tackle challenges such as energy and water use, as they seek to adapt to low carbon living. The series follows the Perera family at ‘work, rest and play’ and shows what they might eat, how they might travel, stay healthy and power their homes in the future. It poses various challenges to the family and offers a glimpse into what solutions are available now and in the future. Xeros featured in a programme titled ‘Work,’ which aired on 19 February 2012 (19.30, Channel 4).
Bill Westwater, Chief Executive of Xeros welcomed Channel 4 to the company’s R&D facility at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Sheffield in August last year, to show how the technology transforms the way clothes are cleaned by a process that uses polymer beads to ‘attract’ stains. The gentle flow of small polymer beads acts just like hand washing, tumbling with the washload and transporting stains off garments to be locked into the bead molecular structure. This exceptional environmental system uses only a fraction of the water, energy and detergent that is required for conventional cleaning.
Bill Westwater, Chief Executive Officer of Xeros, said: “We were delighted that the programme makers chose to feature Xeros technology in action. The programme aims to tackle serious challenges to British households facing up to rising energy and water bills and how they can take affordable steps to live in more sustainable ways.”

Following the approval of the European Food Safety Authority, Revolymer® announces Rev7™ gum distribution deal with Topaz fuel stations
Revolymer® Ltd the revolutionary British polymer company is delighted that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has fully approved its revolutionary Rev7™ gum for sale within the EU and has already secured its very first European distribution with Topaz, Ireland’s largest fuel and service station group.
The deal means that great tasting and environmentally friendly Rev7™gum will be available from May at over 114 forecourt stores across the Republic of Ireland. With this major distribution partnership now secure, Revolymer is now actively seeking further retail partners and hopes to have its gum on-shelf in the UK by autumn of 2012.
As the world’s first commercially available environmentally friendly gum, Rev7™ is a real game changer in the competitive European gum market. Using patented polymer technology the gum can be removed readily from clothes using soap and water, and the streets.
In the Republic of Ireland chewing gum is the single largest component in the food litter category and the second largest component of overall litter after cigarettes. The numbers speak for themselves; in one month Dublin city council removed an estimated 180,000 pieces of embedded gum from Grafton Street, the city’s premier shopping thoroughfare, while across Ireland it is believed that up to 500 tonnes ends up dumped on the streets. Revolymer®’s technology can help solve a very costly and challenging problem and the consumer can help the environment without sacrificing quality.
In addition, to these environmental and convenience benefits, Rev7™ offers consumers a gum with and excellent taste and long lasting flavour. Currently available in peppermint and spearmint flavours and the company plans on expanding the portfolio in the coming year.
Roger Pettman, CEO of Revolymer® said: “With Rev7™ already in over 4,000 stores in the US we are really excited that the range is approved for sale in Europe and we have signed a deal with Topaz to launch the product in Ireland. With over 114 forecourts stocking our gum, this is a significant deal that will put our product in front of thousands of consumers and we hope that soon Rev7™ will be on sale across Europe.” Paul Candon, Marketing and Corporate Services Director of Topaz added: “We are pleased and excited to have added such an innovative product as Rev7™ gum to our offering. We believe that the gum’s longer lasting chew, coupled with the host of environmental benefits, means it will rapidly become a favoured choice with our customers.”

To help grow their business in the UK, Revolymer® has also brought on board the services of leading FMCG distributor and brokerage partner, Worldwide Brands Ltd. Martin Wathes, MD of Worldwide Brands ltd commented on their appointment that: “Worldwide Brands is extremely excited to be working with Rev7™ gum and see a huge potential for the brand.
As someone who regularly chews gum, I was really impressed with the chew and flavour of Rev7™, particularly on long journeys. Furthermore, with its strong environmental credentials and the fact that chewing gum litter is costing the UK government alone over £150 million per year, I can see huge potential for it to become a major player in the European gum market.”

Technology Strategy Board awards prestigious grant to Xeros

Xeros has been awarded a £250,000 grant for research and development by the Technology Strategy Board to accelerate the development of a domestic laundry machine, which will fully exploit Xeros’ environmentally friendly technology. The grant, the highest that can be awarded through the Technology Strategy Board’s Smart scheme, will be match funded by shareholder funds following a successful private equity funding round in 2011.

Xeros has established a process that delivers superior cleaning performance yet uses significantly less water, energy and detergent than conventional washing systems. The process uses small nylon polymer beads to ‘attract’ stains. Within the Xeros washing system, the gentle flow of the beads acts just like water. They tumble with the washload and transport stains off garments to be locked into the nylon’s molecular structure.

Building on its proven success in the commercial laundry market, Xeros will use the grant to design a washing system of comparable size, appearance and cost to conventional front loading machines that are used in millions of homes across the country. When compared to these machines, independent analysis1estimates that a Xeros domestic system would slash energy use by half and reduce water consumption by up to 80 per cent. It would also cut CO2 emissions per wash by 25 per
cent.

Domestic washing machines consume approximately 50 litres of water per wash. On average, washer/dryer systems account for 13 per cent of household energy use. If all UK households were fitted with machines powered by Xeros technology, the potential savings to UK consumers would total more than £2 billion per annum. It would also represent a net reduction of 4.2 million tonnes of CO2 per annum, the equivalent of taking 1.4 million cars off UK roads.

The domestic Xeros washing machine will be approximately one fifth of the size of the commercial technology that continues to be used by Jeeves of Belgravia and Watford Launderers & Cleaners as part of a long term trial.

Bill Westwater, Chief Executive of Xeros, said: “We are delighted that the Technology Strategy Board has awarded a significant grant to Xeros. Together with our own shareholder funding it will enable Xeros to accelerate our plans for the domestic market place. This has long been part of our business plan. If the application of our technology in this market matches the proven viability of our large size machines in the commercial laundry, we are one step closer to our ultimate goal, namely to convert
the world of aqueous washing to Xeros bead cleaning.”

Stephen Browning, Head of the Smart programme at the Technology Strategy Board, said: “The Smart scheme is designed to support research and development by SMEs that has the potential to offer economic growth and lead to the introduction of successful new products and processes. We are therefore very pleased to support Xeros through this grant as it will enable them to make the investment in staff, technology and materials needed to accelerate the development of their innovative product.”

Cleans up at the Climate Week Awards

British invention uses beads to clean clothes, saving water, energy, carbon and waste
Advanced Manufacturing Park (Sheffield, UK), 28 March 2011. The first Climate Week Awards has named Xeros as the ‘Best Technological Breakthrough’ for the unique way that Xeros cleans clothes by using hardly any water. Harnessing over 30 years of research by the University of Leeds, Xeros technology has the potential to transform the way the commercial laundry market cleans clothes by offering an environmentally‐friendly alternative to conventional aqueous washing . Xeros cuts water and energy use, and reduces carbon and effluent emissions.
Xeros uses special polymer beads rather than the usual large amounts of fresh water to clean clothes. Instead a small amount of water is added to loosen clothing stains and activate the beads. Used within a special washing machine also invented by Xeros, the garments are tumbled gently in the beads. They suck dirt off the clothes by absorbing it into their molecular structure. The Xeros beads work for hundreds of washes. At the end of their cleaning life, they will be reused for other applications. For example, by the automotive industry.
Independent analysis confirms that Xeros cleans as well as normal aqueous washers, and environmental consultancy URS found its carbon footprint to be 20% lower. Xeros has raised funds at every stage of its development, most recently £4million in October 2010. The company will achieve full commercialisation later this year with a system designed specifically for the commercial laundry industry.
Bill Westwater, CEO of Xeros, said: “Xeros is delighted to win this award for Best Technological Breakthrough. It is a testament to Dr Steve Jenkins, our Chief Technology Officer at Xeros and his team, who have developed a unique cleaning technology that significantly reduces the environmental impact of cleaning clothes. The global laundry industry is worth over £60 billion per annum, and this award gives Xeros a tremendous boost as we continue down this exciting path towards commercialisation this year.”
Backed by the Prime Minster David Cameron, Xeros received the prestigious ‘Best Technological Breakthrough’ award from Lord Marland, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Changei. The Awards are the centrepiece of Climate Week (21‐27 March), which recognises the very best of what Britain has to offer in combating climate change.
The Climate Week Awards were judged by an internationally‐recognised panel of experts, including Lord Nicholas Stern (author of the Stern Report); former Irish President Mary Robinson; eco‐adventurer David de Rothschild; Ian McEwan, best‐selling author of ‘Solar’; and Tim Smit, founder of the Eden project.
2
Climate Week CEO Kevin Steele said:“The Climate Week Awards celebrate the very best that Britain has to offer in combating climate change. They offer a powerful illustration of what can be achieved to help create a more sustainable, low‐carbon society. It’s through shining examples like these that we can help inspire others to raise their game.”

WWF’s “Top 20 Global Green Game-Changers”

LONDON — While politicians bicker over international action on global warming, many companies are taking the lead and cutting greenhouse gas emissions on their own. While such efforts are unlikely to be enough without strong incentives and regulation from governments, environmentalists are encouraged by how seriously some in the private sector are taking climate change.

They range from small startups based on ideas like a nearly waterless washing machine or carbon-negative cement to a “greening” of supply chains by major multinationals and big retailers…..

The (Almost) Waterless Washing Machine

By Claire SuddathThursday, Nov. 11, 2010
dek
You probably don’t think about this every time you separate your whites, but the U.S. uses more than 330 billion gal. of water on laundry each year, according to the British firm Xeros Ltd. The company is developing a machine that draws cleaning power from reusable, stain-absorbing nylon beads, requiring much less water — as much as 90% less — than a normal washing machine. (See above for how it works.) A commercial version is due out next year: good news for conservation and your monthly water bill.
